The NFL is turning to a passing league with great speed, But why have we turned this way? Just last season Chris Johnson almost passed the NFL single season record for rushing yards. When was the last time in NFL history that someone almost beat the Passing mark for the season(Not counting Drew Brees)?
in 2001 Kurt Warner passed for 4,830 yards with the rams and then in 2007 Tom Brady made 4,806. Each being over 200 yards for the record.
But if you look at rushing last year Chris Johnson ran for 2,006 yards. Jamal Lewis Ran for 2,066 yards in 2003, and in 1998 Terrell Davis ran for 2,008 yards.
The numbers don't look that for off for me. The only difference I can see is the touchdown numbers.
In football the only thing that counts is winning, and to win you need to score more than your opponent. And in the NFL the best way to score is a Touchdown. The current NFL record for TD passes in a season is 50 by Tom Brady in 2007, The most rushing TD is 28 by LaDainian Tomlinson in 2006. Thats a 22 touchdown difference.
By the way it looks Quarterbacks are improving in the overall game while runningbacks are just not the same. Today's QB is way better than the old. and The old RB's are better than the new.
Or is it that QB's have the reffs on their side?

I really don't think that it has anything to do with refs or what have you ... I think QB's today are faster, stronger, and smarter than they were yesteryear where as Running Backs have gotten stronger, and faster sure but they really haven't gotten smarter. They continue to rely on the same basic set of plays every year and if you're fast, and stronger than the others then you'll excel.
QB's have branched out, started using more obscure plays than the standard set, you now see some really goofy options and perhaps a lot more 3rd down - 4th down passes instead of runs.
